The Department of Defense is one of the largest sources of federal spending, distributing hundreds of billions of dollars annually through contracts, personnel, and base operations. Counties with major military installations are among the most federally funded communities in America.
We identified the counties most likely to be defense-dependent based on total federal spending, per-capita intensity, and known military facility presence. These communities receive funding far above national norms.
Top Defense-Dependent Counties
Counties with exceptionally high federal spending that are strongly associated with military installations, defense contracting, or national security operations.
| Rank | County | State | Total Spending | Per-Capita |
|---|
Types of Defense Spending
- Base operations: Maintenance, utilities, construction, and services for military installations.
- Personnel: Military pay, benefits, and housing allowances for service members and families.
- Defense contracts: Procurement of weapons systems, vehicles, technology, and services from private contractors.
- Research and development: Funding for defense labs, testing facilities, and university research partnerships.
Economic Impact of Defense Spending
Defense spending creates multiplier effects in local economies. A dollar spent on a military base generates additional spending in housing, retail, healthcare, and education. However, defense-dependent economies can be vulnerable to base closures, procurement cuts, and shifting strategic priorities.
Methodology
Data from USASpending.gov, U.S. Department of the Treasury, FY2024. Counties were selected based on high total federal spending combined with high per-capita spending, which correlates strongly with major federal facility presence. Exact defense spending is not separately reported in USASpending.gov; this analysis uses total federal obligations as a proxy.
