Federal spending patterns are not static. Counties that were minor recipients a decade ago may now be major hubs due to new facilities, shifting defense priorities, or emergency funding. Understanding these patterns helps businesses, policymakers, and researchers anticipate where federal investment is heading.
While year-over-year trend data is limited in USASpending.gov, the FY2024 snapshot reveals clear patterns in which types of counties currently receive the most intensive federal investment.
Counties with the Highest Federal Investment Intensity
These counties receive the most federal funding per resident, indicating either major facility presence or concentrated program delivery.
| Rank | County | State | Per-Capita | Total |
|---|
Counties with the Lowest Federal Investment Intensity
These counties receive the least federal funding per resident, representing potential gaps in federal program coverage or simply communities with minimal federal facility presence.
| Rank | County | State | Per-Capita | Total |

Methodology
Data from USASpending.gov, U.S. Department of the Treasury, FY2024. Per-capita spending is calculated by dividing total federal obligations by county population. Counties with population below 10,000 or missing spending data were excluded.
